Bungy cord and shuttle mechanism on an UpGate unit

How UpGate bungy cord technology works

Every other automated gate moves a heavy panel sideways. UpGate lifts a light electrified bungy cord straight up, which is why it fits gateways where nothing else does.

UpGate installed on a working Australian farm

ControlAg builds UpGate for working farm gateways.

UpGate is a patented, solar-powered automated farm gate that lifts electrified bungy cords overhead. Farmers operate it from up to 100 metres away and use the same opening for vehicles and cattle.

What is doing the work?

A DC electric motor drives a timing belt in one continuous loop. A solar panel and battery power it, and a handheld remote activates it.

The belt pulls a shuttle up the track, and the shuttle carries the bungy cord overhead. Operated with a remote control just like a garage door.

Why a bungy cord instead of a gate?

The cord connects to your existing electric fence system, so the gateway is electrified when it is closed and cattle respect it the same way they respect the fence line.

A longer cord widens the gateway. A bigger steel gate does not scale the same way, and it needs stronger posts and swing clearance.

  • 1, 2, 3 or 4 strands, most farmers use one
  • Fewer strands means faster operation
  • Solar panel and electronics mounted up high
  • Manual handle release for oversize loads

Does mud stop it?

The runner wheels sit inside the track where mud does not reach easily, with clearance around them so buildup does not bind. The motor has plenty of torque with the bungy cords down low.

Units running on a dairy farm have passed 2,000 operations over more than 18 months without jamming. In the worst case a pump up sprayer and a brush clean it out.

What happens when the power drops?

The solar panel keeps the battery charged through normal use. There is also a button on the outside of the UpGate, so you can open the gateway even when you do not have a remote with you.

If a vehicle is too tall to fit underneath, open the bungy gate by hand with the handle, the same way you would with any bungy cord gate.
