Victorian dairy laneways get walked twice a day, every day. That is a lot of gateway stops, and a lot of mud around the gate you keep opening by hand.
UpGate is a patented, solar-powered automated farm gate that lifts electrified bungy cords overhead. Farmers operate it from up to 100 metres away and use the same opening for vehicles and cattle.
The gateway on the run to the dairy is used more than any other on the farm. Trial farmers averaged 5 to 47 operations a day on gateways like it.
That works out at 30 to 285 hours of labour a year, with payback in 2 to 19 months.

The runner wheels sit inside the track where mud does not reach easily, with clearance around them so buildup does not bind. Units on a dairy farm have passed 2,000 operations over more than 18 months without jamming.
